Retaining Walls – Timbers, Block, Stone
Retaining walls serve multiple purposes in landscape and hardscape construction, but are much more than simply functional. A well-designed and properly installed retaining wall can be a timeless and elegant addition to any patio, garden or landscape. Groundshog Lawn and Landscape has extensive experience creating retaining walls of every type, size and material for clients in Catonsville, Arbutus, Ellicott City, and Baltimore, Maryland.
Retaining walls are installed partially below ground level and are usually constructed to retain the soil behind them, such as a flowerbed built on a slope, or a recessed patio. This means the load they bear comes from one side of the wall, instead of straight down. A retaining wall requires careful construction from an experienced landscape company to resist bowing and overturning of the blocks or stones from this weight.
Retaining Wall Materials
We can install retaining walls in a range of shapes and sizes, and we offer a diverse selection of materials to give you any look you can imagine. We can be built to angle Timber, block and stone are the most popular materials for use in retaining wall construction.
Timber creates a rustic appearance in a variety of shades and finishes. Timber retaining walls are also less expensive to install than their block or stone counterparts. Selecting quality lumber that’s treated for water resistance is essential, as the timbers will have extensive contact with wet soil and ground water.
If you picture a plain gray cinder block retaining wall when you think of concrete block construction, push that image out of your head. Modern concrete blocks come in every shade, texture, shape and size you could conceive. Some blocks offer sophisticated interlocking systems that allow for sturdy construction in every possible application.
While modern blocks have come a long way, nothing equals the timeless look of genuine stone. Because stone retaining walls are created with natural stone, not standard sized blocks, the installation must be completed by an experienced landscape company to ensure the integrity of the wall. Stone walls can be constructed from cut stone that’s split at the quarry into more uniform lengths, or, for a more rustic look, we can use boulders or rubble for the Old World look of a hand-built stone retaining wall.
